The Atkinson Home will soon have two Scotty Hot Boxes, made possible as a result of a generous grant provided by The Naturesave Trust (http://naturesave.co.uk/the-naturesave-trust/). Through the daily running of the Home, there is an amount of waste that can and will be composted. This waste comprises of compostable paper cups, compostable food waste generated in the Home’s kitchen and garden waste. Once composted, this compost will be used to cultivate the large variety of vegetables grown by the young people in the Home’s “Micro Farm”, which in turn are used as ingredients in the menus produced in the kitchen for consumption by our young people. The Scotty Hot Boxes will assist us with this process. Compost friendly cups are to be purchased to replace the wax paper cups (not recyclable) currently used. Composting the new paper cups along with other waste generated through the daily operation of the kitchen will ensure we are able to reduce the amount of waste designated for landfill through sustainable waste management, reduce the current costs associated with the purchase of wax paper cups and reduce our waste disposal costs, whilst providing an education to the young people with regard to single use plastics and environmentally friendly waste management.
The Naturesave Trust is funded by the activities of Naturesave Insurance, the UK’s leading ethical insurance provider for individuals, businesses, charities and community groups.
