Careers process at Atkinson School


Stage 1

As part of the induction process, the young person discusses aspirations, work experience, hopes for the future and career goals.

Stage 2

Young person to access cross curricular careers opportunities through a broad and balanced curriculum.

Young person to identify vocational projects to undertake to build skills.

Maths and English lessons to have elements of vocational project within.

Actions

Discuss work experience options – find out if the young person is interested in accessing external providers such as Hair at the Academy or Dartmoor Rangers and create a plan for them to work towards.

Appointment arranged for young person to meet with careers advisor. This will be supported by Atkinson staff to lend the relationship.

Stage 3

Young person engages in a range of activities linked towards careers and employability. This may include but is not limited to:

  • experiences with local businesses and people to gain further insight into their industry
  • days out in which careers options and industries are discussed and explored
  • engaging in weekly reviews with tutor to review and plan for any additional support
  • changes or experience required to support individual ambitions
  • the young person being supported, where appropriate, to apply for college, courses or next steps

Stage 4

Before the young person leaves, they will work through a variety of AQAs on employability and careers including preparing for work, know their rights, interview skills and writing CVs.

Education summary report

School will collate information on key academic achievements, work experiences and aspirations to share with next placement provider.

Transitional information shared

School to share all academic progress, post-16 possibilities, careers options and progress with key individuals – including social workers, new placements.
